Can you exercise after getting a tattoo? Here’s what you need to know.
Getting a tattoo is exciting, but it’s also a fresh wound that needs proper care. Jumping back into exercise too soon can cause irritation, slow healing, or even lead to infection.
So, how long should you wait before working out?
Experts recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before exercising, giving your body time to recover from the trauma of tattooing. For high-friction areas, like the inner thighs or ribs, it’s best to wait a few more days to prevent irritation.
If you’re a swimmer, you’ll need to hold off for 4 to 6 weeks—chlorine and bacteria can be harmful to healing skin. Runners and gym-goers can return sooner, but make sure to avoid excessive sweating, tight clothing, and direct sun exposure.
The key to training with a fresh tattoo is common sense and good aftercare. Keep the area clean, wear loose clothing, and avoid exercises that put too much pressure on the tattooed area.
If in doubt, take a few extra rest days. It’s better to let your ink heal properly than risk damaging it.
